January 31, 2026, Campaign: As the ground quakes, evil wakes

In Lanthet, we kill a bunch of elementals and summoners, and rescue Merrill.

Last session

We made it to Lanthet. We've met up with the resistance in the sewers, and we've found that the city is being patrolled by elementals.

And now we're jumping out of the sewers to kill some of the summoners.

Out of the sewer, into the shitstorm

  1. Surprise!
    1. Jerry jumps out.
    2. Majorie jumps out of the sewer and fires a longbow twice with some sort of arcane arrow at the left Summoner, an Air Elemental Summoner.
    3. Embersia does some Guiding Bolt to the summoner.
    4. Ryltar jumps out and, disadvantaged and advantaged by the spell, deals 20 Cold to the left summoner. That one dies.
    5. Jerry advances to the Earth summoner, and slashes twice for 33 and Hunter's Mark.
    6. Percival emerges! Tasha's Hideous Laughter makes the summoner laugh, incapacitated and prone.
    7. The Earth Summoner tries to save against the laughter, and doesn't.
  2. Round 1.
    1. Majorie stabs twice with a shortsword and advantage, hitting for advantage.
    2. Jerry advances to the Earth Summoner and slashes twice. He dies.

We look around, and Jerry sees nothing.

We grab the bodies and throw them into the sewer. Then we go back into the sewers.

This was the summoner at the North gate.

The Northwest Gate

We work through the sewers to the Northwest gate, and take a moment to listen. Listening to the air, Jerry hears the crackling and burning of a Fire Elemental, and sees two more summoners.

We decide to stealthily slide the grate off the entrance, see if anyone reacts. With a 18 Sleight-of-Hand, Jerry moves the grate away, and then we retreat so that Percival can use his **Cli Lyre** to apply Invisibility`.

Jerry then invisibly sneaks out of the manhole.

  1. Surprise round!
    1. Jerry moves hunter's Mark onto the air summoner and attacks twice. 22 slashing, she becomes visible, crits for 35. That summoner dies in a fountain of blood, cloven in twain.
  2. Round 1
    1. Percival peers out and gets splashed with blood. He uses Tasha's Hideous Laughter on the Fire Elemental, which is immune to Prone, but is still incapacitated. He inspires Jerry.
    2. Ryltar pops out with a Ray of Frost for the summoner, for 14 damage and Slow.
    3. Jerry moves over and hits the Fire summoner. 19 + 13 slashing.
    4. Majorie pops up and shoots the summoner twice.
    5. The summoner pulls from his armor a Fireball, which Ryltar Counterspells. The summoner also crushes a red crystal, which summons another Fire Elemental.
    6. The older Fire Elemental laughs.
    7. The new Fire Elemental attacks Majorie three times: hit, crit, hit. Total damage 57. But Majorie is still standing!
    8. Embersia jumps out and casts Guiding Bolt, but misses: She's in melee range of the Fire Elemental.
  3. Round 2
    1. Percival casts Vicious Mockery on the Fire Elemental, for 13 Psychic and disadvantage on its next attack. Then he moves in on the Fire Elemental and misses with Mythcarver.
    2. Ryltar Ray of Frosts the Fire Summoner for 18 Cold, and the Fire Summoner dies.
    3. The Fire Elementals flare, unbound by the will of their summoner. They remain.
    4. Jerry flanks the non-laughing Fire Elemental and attacks twice for 20 and 18.
    5. Majorie disengages and moves away. She's got multiple slashes with burns.
    6. The laughing Fire Elemental continues laughing.
    7. The other Fire Elemental hits for 9 Force damage, then doesn't-crit for 7 Force damage. Hunter's Mark fades.
    8. Embersia attacks with her spear, doing a little damage.
  4. Round 3
    1. Percival inspires Ryltar, then with Mythcarver and some good emotions, the sapphire on Mythcarver's pommel glows. He decides to use whatever that is. He pulls his blade to attack — when he pulled his blade out of the stone in his father's office, he saw every previous wielder, and now he feels that in this moment, he can join them. 36 total damage of which 8 is force. Images flash within his mind. Echoes of the blade flash: he swings once, and previous wielders lend their aid.
    2. Ryltar Ray of Frosts the Fire Elemental for 18 and it does reel back in pain.
    3. Jerry hits for 24, killing that fire elemental. She moves over to the other, to provide support.
    4. Majorie runs back to the group, and says, "My skills aren't really good in fighting the Elementals." She's in deep pain.
    5. The laughing elemental continues to laugh.
    6. Embersia casts an upcast Cure Wounds on Majorie for 12.
  5. Round 4
    1. Percival gives Majorie a second-level Cure Wounds for 20.
    2. Ryltar does Ray of Frost for 8 Cold: the first damage on that Fire Elemental.
    3. Jerry moves Hunter's Mark onto this Fire Elemental, and attacks twice, hitting once for 21.
    4. Majorie shoots twice with her bow, with a cold chill on her arrows, missing twice.
    5. Embersia pops a cantrip for 22 damage.
  6. Round 5
    1. Vicious Mockery from Percival for 17 psychic and disadvantage on his next attack. Then he tries to flank the elemental, but doesn't get quite close enough.
    2. Ryltar Ray of Frosts and misses.
    3. Jerry swings twice for 36, and Hides as a bonus action.
    4. Majorie attacks twice and hits twice, at half damage, as her plain wooden arrows hit and burn away.
    5. Still laughin'.
    6. Embersia does some damage to the Fire Elemental, killing it.

Percival's mythcarver has become exalted. The last person he recalls who wielded it in this manner was his grandfather.

Now +3/+3.

Once per long rest, you can make make four attacks, and take a level of exhaustion.

He polishes up his sword a bit, and then moves on.

We noticed that the Fire Elementals didn't immediately attack each other, but we know that there are factions among the Elementals and maybe we can exploit that.

We drag the bodies into the sewer, erase our tracks (Survival 26), replace the sewer grate, and move on our way.

We heal up Majorie. Jerry's 28 has Majorie at 50/75; two healing potions bring her up to 65.

Lewin is in shock about what's occurring. Shocked that we're doing combat and coming out alive. Relieved that we're doing it. He loots the bodies, and finds a yellow crystal. It can be used to summon an Air Elemental, under the caster's control until concentration is broken. Ryltar takes it.

When we reach the central cistern, we hear rumbles of Earth Elementals being dispatched across the town. Seems like a perfect time to raid the amphitheatre!

To the amphitheatre!

We move to the sewer grate closest to the amphitheatre: the Falone-Nathandem family warehouse. Lewin leads us there. We pass by pockets of survivors in alcoves and sewers, preparing themselves to take back their city.

Jerry takes a minute to listen (28 Perception) and hears an Earth Elemental patrol, and a Fire Elemental. We wait for them to pass.

An Air Elemental rushes into our area and sees us immediately. Ryltar, Jerry, and Percival are aboveground.

  1. Round 1
    1. Ryltar does 20 cold damage to the Air Elemental
    2. Percival does Tasha's Hideous Laughter
    3. Jerry casts Conjure Volley for the first time for 8d8 = 52. The Air Elemental slowly descends, laughing.
  2. Round 2.
    1. Majorie pops up and fires an arrow, hitting and critting for 3d8 = 22 + 8 = 34/2 = 17.
    2. The Air Elemental surpasses Tasha's Hideous Laughter.
    3. Ryltar Ray of Frosts for 24 Cold damage; killing it.

So now we sneak towards the Amphitheatre. With Pass Without Trace we sneak into the market, and then around the corner of the market to see if we can see into the amphitheatre.

The trees that were in the amphitheatre are now cinders. What was a good method of concealment is now gone. Three Fire Elementals circle above the amphitheatre, and Air Elemental comes and goes.

We sneak to another building, and learn that the amphitheatre as it sits has no obstacles. It's highly defensible.

The city wall is 15' wide with crenellations, and there are stairs up.

We spend a lot of time disussing tactics, and then there's a high, short scream, cut off. Coming from the amphitheatre. We decide to make a frontal assault.

The closest the three fire elementals get to each other is 25 feet, within 20 feet of each other.

We decide to Dimension Door in, leaving Majorie on the edge of the battlefield, 300 feet away, to snipe at disadvantage, keeping herself safe, and running if . Ryltar makes the proposal; Majorie is accepting of every order made until Ryltar says that she should run. but she accepts it.

Embersia casts Aura of Purity to protect us. Jerry prepares Lighting Arrow at 4th. We Dimension Door in. Ryltar and Percival land us right on the stage.

We appear on the stage, underneath one Fire Elemental. Merrill is half-buried in a stone slab at the front of the stage, beaten and bloodied. Someone else lies slain at the stairs to the amphitheatre.

  1. Round 1
    1. Jerry slashes the Fire Elemental, then looses her upcast Lightning Arrow at a Fire Elemental for 5d8 = 10.
    2. Embersia Channels Divinity for 21.
    3. Ryltar crushes his Air Elemental crystal.
    4. His Air Elemental does some damage.
    5. Fire Summoner attacks Embersia with Elemental Burst thrice, and does some damage, then uses Benign Transportation to move themself and another Summoner away.
    6. Another Fire Summoner hits Ryltar with Elemental Burst for 54.
    7. An Air Summoner teleports away and hits Jerry with **Elemental Burst** thrice for once for 11` Lightning.
    8. The wounded Fire Elemental attacks Jerry thrice with its firey scimitar, hitting once, for 10 slashing and 10 fire.
    9. The hostile Air Elemental attacks Ryltar for more lightning and Force.
    10. Another Fire Elemental attacks Jerry for 8 slashing 4 fire.
    11. Percival casts Mass Suggestion on all enemy creatures within 60 feet, using his Lyin' Lyre, telling them: "Return to home, and stay there." All our enemies fail.
    12. Stepping onto the stag from backstage is a Blue Summoner and an watery Elemental.
    13. Blue Summoner begins to cast a spell; Percival Counterspells, blocking a 5th-level Wall of Fire. "Oh, you're all nice and lined up, somewhat," says the summoner, and uses Aquatic Lash to make three attacks against Embersia, for some slashing and cold damage.
    14. Majorie doesn't take any action that we can see. (misses both attacks)
  2. Round 2
    1. Jerry makes a Whilrwind Attack moves over to Blue Summoner. She deals 13 + 16 to Blue Summoner, plus 13 to the Marid. It's an elemental noble akin to a Djinn, a Water Genie.
    2. Embersia drops Aura of Purity and casts Spirit Guardian, excepting allies and the charmed Elementals.
    3. Ryltar casts Psychic Lance on the Blue Summoner, incapacitating him,
    4. Ryltar's Air Elemental flies to the other side of the Marid and it deals 10 total to the Marid.
    5. The Fire Elementals, the Air Elemental, the two Fire Summoners, and the Air Summoner run away.
    6. An Earth Elemental erupts from the ground to attack Embersia. The first attack is an Under Strike dealing 65 damage and knocking her prone; the second strike deals only 9 damage. She's prone but she's still alive.
    7. Percival does Hideous Laughter to the Earth Elemental. The spell doesn't take.
    8. Blue Summoner is incapacitated.
    9. The Marid takes 16 radiant from Embersia's Spirit Guardians, and its speed is halved. It makes attacks against Embersia, who Warding Flares the first attack but fails to block it. Total 24 damage from the first attack; she's still alive. 27 damage; she's down. Spirit Guardians go away. The Marid then attacks the Air Elemental, which takes 24 damage.
    10. Majorie does nothing that we can see. (misses both attacks)
  3. Round 3
    1. Jerry moves over to Embersia and shoves a Potion of Greater Healing
    2. Embersia stands up and casts Heal at 6th level, for 70 HP, on herself.
    3. Ryltar repeats Psychic Lance at the Blue Summoner, only dealing 22 psychic damage.
    4. Ryltar's Air Elemental doesn't regain its elemental attack. so it makes three normal attacks against the Marid, missing once, critting, and hitting for 20 Force damage.
    5. The Earth Elemental doesn't regain its elemental attack, so it does a little damage.
    6. Percival does some Mythcarver attacks, 30 altogether.
    7. The Marid does Water Jet: a 10-foot wide, 60-foot-long jet of water hitting Jerry, Embersia, and Ryltar. Full damage is 29 cold damage and knocked prone.
    8. Majorie hits the Marid for 11.
  4. Round 4
    1. Jerry pops Hunter's Mark on the Blue Summoner and deals 25 + 12.
    2. Embersia casts Mass Cure Wounds on everyone except Ryltar, who's way out of range.
    3. Merrill comes to consciousness.
    4. Ryltar casts Psychic Lance on the Blue Summoner again, for 27 Psychic. A beam of purple energy shoots from Ryltar's forehead into one of the Blue Summoner's eyeballs, and the other eyeball explodes. The corpse falls over.
    5. The Air Elemental moves to whack the Earth Elemental, regaining its lightning strike. It misses with the first hit, crits with the lightning strike, and misses. 2d8+4 force + 8d8 lightning = 11 force + 48 lightning and Stunned.
    6. Merrill exhaustedly calls for help.
    7. The Earth Elemental is stunned.,
    8. Percival with advantage attacks the Earth Elemental, but somehow misses.
    9. The Marid does another Water Jet; Percival Cutting Words for 8, dealing 29 Cold damage, downing Ryltar, hitting Percival and Jerry and blasting them across the amphiteatre. Merrill is also downed.
    10. Majorie doesn't attack.
  5. Round 5
    1. Jerry casts Lightning Arrow and misses, dealing 13 lightning damage to the Marid, Air Elemental, and Lightning Elemental. Second arrow to the Marid for 14.
    2. Embersia casts Flame Strike on the three summoned beings, for 4d6 Fire plus 4d6 Radiant, dealing 10 + 16, killing the Earth Elemental.
    3. Ryltar passes a death save.
    4. Merrill has a turn.
    5. Air Elemental moves over to Percival and misses three attacks.
    6. Percival does some Fireball to the Marid and Air Elemental, dealing 30 Fire to them.
    7. The Marid does another Water Jet, and thankfully Ryltar isn't in the blast zone. It's not an attack, so Merrill only takes one failed death save. Half damage is 19 Cold.
  6. Round 6
    1. Jerry pops Hunter's Mark on the Air Elemental and flanks it with Percival, making two attacks with the Moon Scythe and Orcish Fury, killing the Air Elemental. It dissipates. Her gauntlets glow.
    2. Embersia uses the Stormrider Boots to fly across the amphitheatre, putting her in a spot for Mass Cure Wounds to hit Merrill and Jerry and Embersia and Percival for 11.
    3. Ryltar passes a death save. The bassy growl abates.
    4. Percival attempts to free Merrill from her stone coffin with Stone Shape, and she is no longer restrained.
    5. The Marid casts Plane Shift on itself. We let it go.

Jerry goes over to Ryltar and feeds him a health potion for 6. "Let's go find Majorie and get out of this place," says Jerry.

The air elementals that were circling around are moving towards the city center, away from us.

Merrill is free but weak.
