The Fifty-Fifth Session
October 16, 2021, Campaign: As the ground quakes, evil wakes
An energetic encounter with lake trolls on the river to Greyharbor results in four trolls dead and one swimming away. The Party buys supplies for desert travel, and seeks passage on a boat to a new town. Salris finds his brother, and reveals himself to him.

Last session
Thalia told off The Party for hiring assassins. We were gifted The Regular Inn in Quadroads by its owners, and renamed it to The Irregular Inn. Then we teleported to Ren's house in the Woven Council, hiked overland to the eastern river, and rode the river down to Riverbend.
At Riverbend, we decided to take passage via ship rather than traipse through the desert to the northern jungles.
Downriver
We're on the boat to Greyharbor, and we spend the second day floating downriver. Night falls and we pull into shore. Salris spent the day thinking about what he was going to do in Greyharbor, and about what he had done in Greyharbor. Jerry spent the day fending off rocks.
The next day, Salris has finished his woolgathering and continues piloting the boat downstream, excellently doing a great job.
When a green-skinned blubbery creature rises from the river to try to swipe Percival off his perch at the bow, Percival does a great job of not getting swiped. He's a Bard! He stays on his feet, even when the boat bobbles.
- Round 1: Five Lake Trolls surround the boat and begin to attack the Party. Vurguron and Jerry are pulled overboard; Jerry returns to the boat. Ryltar Slows the trolls. Percival Polymorphs one troll into a fish.
- Two more trolls appear: one on each side of the boat. One greener and one redder.
- The first, greyer troll attacks Percival with two claws attacks and a bite, dealing
29damage. - Vurguron is grappled by the green troll, and pulled into the water.
- Jerry is grappled by the red troll, and pulled into the water.
- A white troll appears next to Jerry, and attacks for
40bludgeoning and slashing, and some of the red troll's blood splashes on her weapon, for a-1to attack. - Vurguron struggles.
- Percival turns the greyer troll into a salmon with Polymorph.
- Ryltar casts Slow on all five trolls, and succeeds.
- Jerry breaks free from the red troll, swims back to the surface, and climbs into the boat. She casts Hunter's Mark on that troll.
- Salris casts Synaptic Static on the red and white trolls, doing some psychic damage to them.
- The boat sails 20 feet downstream.
- Round 2: Vurguron breaks free of the trolls holding him underwater, and swims to shore. The rest of the Party attacks the trolls consistently, and Salris gets to try the Whip of Wounding out on a troll.
- The trolls on the left side of the boat, holding Vurguron, attack him, but miss. They are still Slowed.
- The trolls on the right side of the boat swim to catch up with it. The green one attacks Salris for
30damage. The white one attacks Vurguron, and still misses. - The fish troll swims around some, and jumps into the air to try to slap Jerry. It fails, and falls into the water.
- Vurguron, underwater and surrounded by 3 trolls, tries to break the grapple again, and succeeds. He swims to shore, and attacks the three trolls with Firebolt. The trolls are a little warmer now.
- Percival Inspires Jerry.
- Ryltar casts Cone of Cold on Vurguron's three trolls, and does a shitton of damage to them: 39 to two trolls and 18 to two.
- Jerry slashes the marked troll twice for
35damage. - Salris attacks that same troll twice with his whip, for
10damage, and one Wound. (That's1d4necrotic per turn.) - The boat moves 20 feet downstream.
- Round 3: Vurguron jogs along the riverbank, keeping up with the boat, as everyone attacks the trolls, and the trolls attack Vurguron. One troll attacking the boat is knocked out by Percival's Thunder Boomerang.
- Two trolls move to Vurguron, attacking for a decent amount of damage.
- The white troll follows the boat.
- The red troll follows the boat, but is no longer confused by Synaptic Static. It takes
4Necrotic damage. - The Fish is no longer Slowed.
- Vurguron suggests that we land the boat. The trolls next to him are the green and the Toa Hordika Matau, and he attacks the green one for
14slashing4radiant, and then10slashing4radiant. Then he runs away. - Percival throws his Thunder Boomerang, stunning the white troll and doing
6bludgeoning7thunder. - Ryltar Cone of Colds the troll next to the boat, as well as the two that were attacking Vurguron, dealing
29to the white and Matau trolls, and14to the green. - Jerry attacks the red troll for
33damage. - Salris attacks the red troll twice with his Flametongue and once with the Wounding Whip, missing with the whip. The sword does a Fireball's worth of damage to the troll, but it's still alive.
- The boat moves 20 feet downstream.
- Round 4: The downed white troll revives, and Vurguron downs a shore troll. More damage is dealt, in both directions. Jerry manages to kill the white troll.
- The trolls on shore dash to catch up with Vurguron.
- The red troll advances, and attacks Jerry for
12damage. She keeps Hunter's Mark active. The troll passes a Wisdom save, and is no longer slowed. - The white troll is still stunned by the thunder boomerang, and is floating dead in the water.
- Vurguron casts Blur on himself, and then runs away from the slowed trolls. They're still unable to both catch up with and attack him in a single turn.
- Percival casts Fireball for
29damage on the underwater white troll, and58damage to the - Ryltar channels a sorcery point through his middle fingers to a fifth-level Cone of Cold on the white, green, and Matau trolls, for
47cold apiece. - Jerry makes two attacks against the red troll, expending her Orcish Fury for
27slashing. - Salris whips the red troll for a little damage and another Wound, hexing him.
- The boat moves 20 feet downwind.
- Round 5: Jerry is downed by a troll, and is revived by Percival. Incensed, she casts Lightning Arrow and manages to hit half the Party, as well as turn the Polymorphed fish back into a troll. Vurguron kills a shore troll.
- The red troll, no longer slowed, makes claw, claw, and bite attacks, missing once and critting Jerry. She takes
26bludgeoning and loses concentration on Hunter's Mark. The troll takes6damage from its two wounds. - The two shore trolls, green and Matau, advance to Vurguron.
- The salmon swims to keep up.
- The white troll catches up with the boat. It's still slowed.
- Vurguron attacks the green troll, for
15slashing and4radiant, bringing it down. It's not dead, but it is down. Sus. - Percival casts Fireball on the Matau, white and red trolls, for a ton of damage, but no one is down.
- Ryltar turns a fourth-level spell slot into sorcery points, and then casts Ray of Frost at the white troll, hitting and slowing it. And downing it.
- Jerry re-casts Hunter's Mark on the red troll, and uses Whirlwind Attach to attack white. She deals
19damage to white, misses Red once, and deals10to red. - Salris attacks the red troll, dealing
22magical slashing, and5fire damage, downing it, and4necrotic. Then Salris whips the troll for a5whip and6necrotic damage and another Wound. - The boat moves 20 feet forward.
- The red troll, no longer slowed, makes claw, claw, and bite attacks, missing once and critting Jerry. She takes
- Round 6: The trolls down Jerry again, and she is revived again. More damage to everyone.
- The red troll takes
9damage from its three Wounds, and revives. One claw attack lands on Jerry. - The green troll revives, and moves, and attacks Jerry with a bite. The combined damage downs Jerry.
- The white troll does not get back up. It's dead.
- Vurguron attacks the green troll, attacking and attacking and attacking, killing the troll.
- Percival walks to Jerry, and casts a fourth-level Cure Wounds for
19, and a Bardic Inspiration for Ryltar. - Ryltar leans off the edge of the ship, and Ray of Frosts the red troll. It goes down.
- Jerry decides to fuck the trolls. She casts Lightning Arrow and misses with her dart, dealing only
14to the red troll. The Matau troll takes11lightning. And so do Jerry and Salris and Percival. Percival loses concentration, and the fish turns into a troll again. She throws another dart at the Matau troll for9piercing. - Salris whips the red troll twice, killing him. The Matau troll, next to the boat, takes
2fire and13slashing. - The boat moves 20 feet.
- The red troll takes
- Round 7: The remaining shore troll decides to attack the boat instead of playing catch-up with Vurguron. Jerry is downed again! Revived, she downs that shore troll.
- The Matau troll shrugs off its wounds, and catches up with the boat.
- The grey troll claws at Jerry twice, knocking her down.
- Jerry revives with Relentless Endurance and makes an attack with Orcish Fury and her glaive, dealing
17slashing to the grey troll. - The grey troll makes another claw attack, and downs Jerry again.
- The Matau troll is closest to Vurguron, but it's in the water. He casts Ice Knife for some damage.
- Percival casts Cure Wounds on Jerry for
16. - Ryltar Slows the first two.
- Jerry casts Hunter's Mark on the Matau troll, attacks it twice and the grey troll once. The Matau troll is downed and takes two death saves, and the grey troll takes
15damage. - Salris swords the grey troll for a nice amount of slashing, fire, and necrotic, and then some whip and necrotic damage, and a Wound.
- The boat moves forward 20 feet.
- Round 8: The shore troll revives, but is finally killed by Jerry. The lone remaining troll takes a significant amount of damage.
- The Matau troll revives and catches up with the boat. It attacks Salris for
9damage. - The grey troll catches up with the boat and attacks Jerry, but misses. It is no longer wounded.
- Vurguron moves up some and swims to the boat.
- Percival heals Jerry for
19. - Ryltar Ray of Frosts the Matau troll.
- Jerry kills the Matau troll, and then does
14slashing to the grey troll, to whom she has moved Hunter's Mark. - Salris swords and whips the lone remaining troll for a little sword and fire and necrotic damage,
6whip and5necrotic, and a Wound. - The boat moves 20 feet downstream.
- The Matau troll revives and catches up with the boat. It attacks Salris for
The troll decides to swim away. It's lost four companions, and still hasn't managed to get anything from the boat.
We're still on the boat. And ouch, that hurt.
We eat lunch and take short rests, and Ryltar pilots the boat safely down the river.
We pull over for the night, and sleep once more in Percival's dome.
The next day, we make it to Greyharbor without incident.
Greyharbor
Salris disguises himself as Leon.
The river widens out into a bowl of a natural harbor, with a massive rock face at the edge of the coastline. The rock face has a natural cut in it, where ships can pass from the cove, through the rock wall into the ocean. The channel has traffic in both directions, and there's a lot of traffic. Lively horns and whistles and signals.
We find a public dock and collapse the boat.
We're looking for desert clothes and travel north; Leon will go off on his own to take care of some business. And we shall meet him at the Splintered Mast.
The cove itself is a marketplace of trade goods, of stilted houses and docks and warehouses,
Ryltar and Jerry ask after desert clothing, and are directed to the Majestic Pixie, which has all varieties of clothing, run by an older half-orc, long in tooth, with the air of an established seamstress. We explain our needs to her, and she finds for us the standard clothes: Tuscan Raider chic from head to toe.
For 4 gold, we get the full set of sand wear for the Party: turbans, scarves, veils, wraps and robes.
We get Ryltar a coolie hat, and a few more waterskins.
The seamstress gives us a napkin-sketch map, which shows the jungle to the north of the desert, and grassland north of that. The Viridian Sea is around Greyharbor, and a continent is visible to the far northeast.

We go to the cartographer's store that the seamstress recommended, which is full of illustrations and maps. There's a chart of the Viridian Sea and its inlets, and a map of Setton, which is the jungle north of the desert. We buy those two maps for 5 gold apiece.
The maps show a city on a river where the Setton Jungle reaches the sea, and so we go to look for passage. But before that, dinner.
We go to find the Splintered Mast tavern, and are warned that it's probably not the place where anyone'd want to go.
The Adventures of Leon Ziki
He goes to the nonspecific place. Knocks at the door; it's not locked. He pushes the door open. It sweeps open a path in the dust. To keep the illusion of being a Human who does not have Darkvision, he lights a torch. He looks around the dust and cobwebs. One table leg is broken, chairs are missing. Kitchen is bare.
He goes upstairs, to the room where Salris and his brother slept. The beds are made and covered in dust. Traditional bunk beds. Nothing the bedroom.
So now he goes to the other room, where The Act happened. (In the house, not on a ship. That's why he had to stab his mother.) There's still the stain. There's a scroll.
Leon Ziki picks up the scroll and opens it. It's in Salris's brother's handwriting:
I still live. I will find you.
The windows are closed, the doors are closed. Leon leans on the table, next to the wall, and drops the Mask of Many Faces.
Crossed arms.
Recasts his disguise, and goes out into the harbor.
Salris' ship, the Grey Mist, is not in the harbor.
Leon goes back to his house and knocks on the neighbor's door.
"Hello?"
"I was sent here to Grey Harbot to look for the Dereshar Brothers. Do you know where they went?"
The neighbor invites him in for a glass of water. The neighbor says that the Dereshars were set upon by pirates. But they only found one body: the father. The others, no idea.
Leon thanks the neighbor for his time, and goes back to the Dereshar house. Drops his disguise, latches the door. Ryltar goes back to the bedroom and flops on his bed.
"Those guys have probably bought all their stuff anyways. I have a little time. Where did you go, where did you gooooo? You little shit."
He puts the disguise back on, and walks out, to the tavern.
Finding passage
The Harbormaster is a black Dragonborn, and when we ask, he says there are many ships headed to the city in Setton. It's a regular route.
- The Flying Banshee: reputable
- The Sea Wolf: reputable
Both are cargo ships, but they do take a few passengers. The Flying Banshee will leave this evening, making a stop at the Cumberlite Isles. The Sea Wolf will take direct passage to city, leaving in four days.
The Flying Banshee sails with the tide; if we get there in an hour with gold in hand we should be able to board. The harbormaster gives us directions, and we tip him a gold piece. He says he'll tell them to look for us.
The Shattered Mast
The tavern is made from a broken ship; the door is the prow and a mast leans drunkenly over the street. Leon Ziki enters and goes to the bar.
The barkeep notices him: "You're not from around these parts; what can I do you for?"
Leon: "I'm looking for information. What do you know about the Grey Mist?"
The bar falls silent, even the music.
"You probably need to talk to Bladebrand over there," says the barkeep. He calls out, "Captain! A question about your old ship."
There in a corner is a Tiefling with an open coat, bare chest, tricorn with a slash, boots propped on the table, a rapier, a glass of wine in his hand.
"And what wretched soul gave you that name," asks Seamus Dereshar.
"Gimme two of what he's drinking," says Leon, dropping a platinum on the bar. He takes the glasses over to Seamus, gives him a glass, sits down.
"Where'd you hear of that ship," asks Captain Seamus, who has an eyepatch over his right eye.
Leon drops his Mask of Many Faces, and Salris looks his brother in the face for the first time since That Night.

The Party levels up to 11.
