The Ninety-Third Session

October 14, 2023, Campaign: As the ground quakes, evil wakes

Shopping in Quadroads, and we plan improvements to the Regular Inn. We gain access to the Teleportation Circles of the Temple of Ioun, and check in with Moon. We gain audience with the Ascendants tomorrow. Thrai is happy to hear that we've done some stuff, but now she needs us to deal with a spectre. And Bugfood leaves us a message about Salris.

Last session

After losing Kerjes' body to the Mummy Lord, we went to Sky Diamond, and learned that Belladonna caused the Divergence. We went to the Pyramid and found the canoptic jars and smashed them, at the expense of Jerry's death. She was revived, and we left the Lightning Lance behind. We then went to the Ice Lord's lair and saved Ockoh. His cart is not recoverable, but we defeated some Flail Snails and recovered their shells. Now we plan to go to Quadroads. sp

Morning

Percival notes that his Vest of Many Pockets is beginning to smell; he investigates and finds three pockets that once held food. Then he opens another pocket, and finds a marble-sized bead that crackles with arcane energy. It's a Bead of Force, which is a one-minute Pokéball;

Off to Quadroads

Jerry and Vurguron heft the Flail Snail shells, and off we go to the Quadroads, riding Ryltar's Teleport using a climbing kit purchased in a shop in the Quadroads. His ice shell forms and shatters, and we find ourselves in an alley in the Quadroads.

We leave the alley and try to find out where we are; and learn that we're kind of far from the Regular Inn, but we're in the crafting quarter and so we go find a carter and hire his cart to take our stuff to the armorer that we know about. "Battle Ready Bertie" is awake, and we show him our wares: 1 intact shell, three large sheets of shell, and 100 pounds of fragments and powder. For trade, he says he can make a Spellcatcher Shield or refer us to someone who can make a cloak with the powder. We ask if he could make a magical stove and kitchen set for Ockoh, and we're agreed. He takes the whole shell and three sizeable chunks, and he says a potion store or seamstress could make use of the dust. We shake on it, and go off to find a clothier. It'll take a few weeks. Also we get a lead case for the Key to Belladonna's prison.

The "Cloak and Shadow" looks very goth. Percival approaches the counter, and flirts with the shopkeep. We ask her to imbue his fine clothes with the snail shell powder to make them shimmer. She lists off a few possible enchantments, and we go with the Doublet of Dramatic Demise, which lets him monologue while making death saves. It'll take three days before the doublet is ready.

We go to "Goodbarrel Goodmagics" and sell off the following:

This all comes out to 8,500 gp. This splits 6k to Ryltar and 2500 to Percival. Ryltar is worried about the deal with the devil, and being able to pay off the 14k gp bounty on Dirius.

Then we go to Glassbottom's Tinctures, and he has only one waterbreathing potion, at 190gp. Percival buys it.

We go someplace else and buy 1500gp worth of diamonds, for Revivify purposes. And do some more selling.

Shopping Complete! Now for Extreme Makeover Inn Edition

The Irregular Inn is in the center circle of town. There's a sign in the window saying "closed for renovations." The blinds are drawn.

Ryltar knocks on the door.

There's a rustling inside, and a gruff, "can't you read the sign?"

We reply, "We own this place." The door unlocks.

It's Cato Fenross! We greet him. He's been fixing up the place and training up the lad. We loop him in on all things Ockoh, and he's resigned to it. The houses left and right of us won't sell, but the people behind might sell. And we could expand down and up.

The folks across our back alley are a warehouse operator. And the two-storey warehouse can be built upwards with more stories. We go talk to the owners. They've got an office in one corner.

So Percival flirts with the owner: she says they're considering selling, because their business has outgrown the warehouse. They're relocating to a new location closer to the mountain. We don't actually know what a good asking price is.

Bargaining happens.

For 5000 gold (from Percival's pockets) and a contract as a supplier to the hotel, she agrees to sell the warehouse to us. 2500 up front, 2500 on delivery once they're moved out. Deal. Percival gets a larger split of the profits.

Cato Fenross is is having trouble catching up on the fact that we bought a whole new property in 30 minutes flat.

Jerry takes Fenross out for a cup of tea and catches him up on stuff. "Alright," he says. "Buy why?" More explanations.

There's a question of what we want to do to the place; what our plans are; we trust Fenross on that front. We want it to be "better than the fucking Coinflip Inn, because I hate that place," says Ryltar.

Fenross says that renovations will cost 2000 gp, and salary for staff will be about 120gp. We pay for four months.

We check in with the kid. Xander has been scrubbing the place clean. He says that Thrai had stationed a guard at the property to keep it secure before we arrived.

We go off to the guards garrison to thank Thrai. It's a brick building in the wall of the city, and it's early evening. She works night shift. Right.

After that, we go to the Ascendants, to ask for access to a Teleportation Circle. From the first receptionist, Ryltar asks if the Ascendants could give us any advice. The receptionist returns with an appointment for us with Sumara, and escorts us to Sumara's office. Sumara's office has a simple door, with iconography of moons, and the symbol of Selune. Her office is full of large swaths of hanging silk in blues and purples, as if we're swimming in silk in this circular room. There's a central basin in the room, flowing with clear water. Sumara is a middle-aged androgynous elf, oozing grace and elegance, drifting between the cloths.

Sumara suggests the Temple of Ioun for Teleportation Circles. Sumara writes us a letter of recommendation, and says that we should be able to get access if they're still open.

Jerry asks if we could talk with someone about the recent "security state of the continent" with regards to Kerjes, the Mummy Lord, the Divergence, and other goings-on. Sumara says to come back tomorrow at 10 a.m. We thank her for her time.

At the smooth-walled triskelion-shaped Temple of Ioun, we enter and meet the punk elf librarian. They're Percival's rival.

We are escalated up the chain of librarians until the chief librarian greets us and says that Sumara has praised us greatly. He believes that we can be allowed access, and leads us through the stacks to the place. There are two different sigils there, one of which Ryltar recognizes. He takes both.

We ask after Moon; she's around. Hugs Jerry and Vurguron, nods to Percival, and hesitantly hugs Ryltar. We catch up. She writes that her faith grows every day; Ryltar says that he's walking a similar path with Denier.

Dirius is scheduled to give a lecture at this library tomorrow; she's apparently in and out frequently but the Temple of Ioun uses her for research.

We ask Moon about information on threats; she is very surprised to learn that we have the Deck of Many Things. She wants to draw a card. Ryltar thinks that this wouldn't help her, but would let her draw. Jerry says that we should do this not in a populated area. Moon can leave the temple, but we don't want to get in trouble with the temple if she dies, because it would be our fault, says Ryltar. He promises to give her that opportunity when she has the ability to travel more freely.

She writes, "I trust you," and then turns her book around, and then writes something that she won't share with us.

Insight: She's a driven kind of gal. The card is a way to free herself, she thinks. Ryltar has given her an out, but has given her a goal to work towards. Slow and steady and relenting. Going against her instinctual drive, now she's willing to wait, to continue working on improving her reputation and freedom in the temple.

We tell her that she's going to see us more often; we have the Teleportation Circle permissions now.

We offer anything; even a bag lunch of oosahs. She didn't know about Ockoh; we tell her about that and the Irregular Inn.

Moon gives Ryltar a note labeled: "Later". He pockets it.

Then we go off to see Thrai.

"So. You're back. Great." We catch her up on the goings-on at the pyramid, with the names of the dead, and the destroyed canoptic jars. She doesn't know about the Mummy Lord; we tell her that we know who he is and how old he is.

She tells us that there's a roaming specter at the bottom of the mountain, berating anyone who approaches the mountain. A stiff breeze blows it away; it's wisps of smoke. It's spooky, not causing any harm. Thrai doesn't know what it wants. She's stuck at her desk.

"We have a 10 o'clock appointment with the Ascendants tomorrow, but our afternoon seems open," says Jerry.

"Very well; just head to the mountain and head towards the screams." It's not Undead; the casters can't deal with it. We don't have much information on it.

Ryltar tries to dig for more information; Thrai can't give more information and is starting to get exasperated. Percival slaps Ryltar gently; Ryltar apologizes to Thrai and offers his cheek for slapping, dropping Mage Armor. Thrai looks at Jerry; Jerry slaps him for 6.

So tomorrow morning we'll head out at 6 a.m. to investigate the ghost. Then 10 a.m. for the appointment with the Ascendants, and 2 p.m. for Dirius' lecture, and back to Thrai by 6 p.m. to report on the specter.

When we get back to the Inn, there's a brown tufted squirrel sitting on the doorknob. It speaks! It's Bugfood! "Hey, couldn't talk to you in dreams. Salris needs help." We ask: where and how. But there's no reply, because this spell is Animal Messenger.

Percival has Sending and so we can send to Bugfood: "Where is Salris and how can we help?"

Bugfood replies:
