The Third Session: Kobolds continued

March 23, 2019, Campaign: As the ground quakes, evil wakes

The Party continues exploring the Kobold cave, and finally finds Kan, the child we had been looking for. Then we kill the big bad Kobold chieftan.

The Party begins the session in the Kobolds' cave, still in the mine. Having recently battled the Kobold inventor and his pet giant skunk, the party pauses for a moment to consider their next actions. The skunk's spray is slowly dissipating. Movement options are forward or back, where "back" is the mines with the dead inventor, and "forward" is an unknown hallway.

Bugfood investigates the inventor's body, and gains a clay pot, a woven basket, and a few bottles. Some of the bottles are potions: a caustic potion (Acid), a smokey potion (Alchemist's Fire). The basket contains something skittering; Bugfood opens the basket and sets free a small batch of centipedes, crying "be free!" They run away and enter holes in the walls and floor.

From the three pits in the mine, where before Kobolds had been jumping out with pickaxes, there are only indignant squeaks. Last session, the Party cut the ropes leading into the pits.

We discuss taking a short rest; our paladin Tula Blackthorn is normally opposed to doing such things but she is presently at 1 HP and therefore indisposed. She doesn't object. But the party members are all out of hit dice, and there will be no benefit to taking a short rest.

Bugfood leads the party forward, following the tracks of the skunk and the child. The tunnel turns to the left and widens to 10 feet wide. There are wooden structures holding the ceiling up; we appear to have hit an actual mineshaft. There's a scattering of ropes and posts blocking our way as we move forward, like a spiderweb of ropes and posts.

The first trapped hallway

Bugfood advances to the first post blocking our path. Ropes tied to the post and anchored in the walls limit the passageway. It would be easy for Small creatures to pass; Medium or armored creatures would have to move slowly. Three ropes dangle from a fixed point in the ceiling.

Bugfood pulls on all three ropes at once. Black oil splashes down from the ceiling and covers the floor, narrowly missing him with its splash.

After a momentary discussion of the oil, Bugfood casts Produce Flame on the oil, but the flame sizzles out. Ryltar walks around the puddle carefully.

The next set of ropes forms an X in the passageway, which Bugfood sets on fire. Ryltar hastily retreats behind the oil. The ropes catch fire and snap. Two swarms of centipedes appear from the holes in the wall.

Against the Centipedes

  1. Round 1
    1. Salris throws an Explosive Flask at the two swarms, one of which is scattered in half.
    2. Ryltar skips backwards, casts Ray of Frost at the second swarm, and misses.
    3. Jerry throws an Explosive Flask at the swarms, dealing 18 poison damage. The first swarm dies; the second swarm is still intact.
    4. The remaining swarm of centipedes runs forward and crawls all over Bugfood, biting him many times. He takes 5 damage.
    5. With his quarterstaff, Bugfood starts hitting himself all over. He smashes in all the right spots and finishes off the swarm.

The third trap is another cross of ropes. Bugfood Produce Flames it, burning the ropes away. Nothing happens.

The fourth trap is a set of five posts sticking up in an odd configuration. Jerry pokes the posts. Wooden plates held against the ceiling by the posts shift slightly, releasing a little sand. Tula casts Detect Magic and sees a faint magic from down the hall, but not from this trap. Tula and Jerry hold the plates against the ceiling, while the party passes under their arms, but Jerry slips and drops a plate. The room starts to fill with sand. Ryltar and Bugfood make it through quickly, but Salris begins to suffocate under the sand, and Vurguron is buried outright. Jerry digs Salris and Vurguron out, freeing their heads.

The fifth probable trap is another cross of ropes; Ryltar bursts through the ropes. The ceiling drops a flask's worth of brownish oil, which misses him. Ahead in the hallway, there's light on the left side, which means there's a passage on the right. He tries to see past the sixth trap to the right-hand-side corridor, from which light is coming. He sees a shadow, and calls back, "We have company."

"That's inconvenient," replies Jerry, before freeing Salris and Vurguron's heads from the sand once more.

The sixth obstacle is another cross of ropes. And beyond it, walking around the corner, is our buddy, a Kobold with a bunch of pockets and bottles and things on his armor. A makeshift Kobold.

The makeshift Kobold

  1. Round 1
    1. Bugfood moves past Ryltar, and casts Frostbite on the Kobold, dealing 1 cold damage. ("A coldbold!" — Tod)
    2. Vurguron fails a Strength check, and remains stuck in the sand.
    3. Tula throws her javelin at the Kobold, 30 feet away, with disadvantage and half-cover (Ryltar is ahead of her) and bounces the javelin off the wall.
    4. The Kobold throws a green slime pot at Ryltar, which bounces off the wall in front of him. There's now green slime on the wall next to the sixth rope trap. Nothing happens so the slime.
    5. Ryltar casts Ray of Frost on the Kobold, hitting for 3 cold damage.
    6. Jerry advances to the sixth rope trap, and examines it. A cross of ropes enters the corners of the walls and ceiling, much like the first trap. But she can't tell whether it's a trap.
    7. Salris, still buried to his waist in the sand, casts Eldritch Blast at the "makeshift" Kobold, killing him.

Ryltar crawls under the ropes of the sixth trap. With disadvantage he trips the ropes; a black oil oozes down from the ceiling, coating him fully and restraining him. He struggles against the ooze.

Salris and Vurguron try to escape the sand, where they're buried to their waists. Vurguron fails with a 1, Salris is still trapped. Tula helps Salris out, and then helps Vurguron out.

Bugfood walks around the problem that Ryltar is having. He walks to the end of the corridor, and peers around the corner.

The two Kobolds, and the pots

The next room is 30x20, with a paths leading off to the left and right.

Next to the basket is a Kobold, putting the lid on a basket. And next to the fire is the carriage driver Kobold, wearing studded leather and pouches and a cap.

  1. Round 1
    1. Vurguron is still in the hallway. He saw Bugfood run up to the corner and freeze. He can just barely see the Kobold with the basket. He runs up to the basket Kobold and misses the Kobold with his sword, lightly caressing the Kobold's thigh. On the rack behind the Kobold are tons of pots and bottles.
    2. With Jerry's assistance, Ryltar just barely squeaks out of the oil. He stands up and moves out of the oil.
    3. Tula advances to the basket, and steps on it, falling two feet into it, taking 1 point of damage. Centipedes and scorpions begin to crawl over her. She attacks the same Kobold that Vurguron attacked, and misses as she stumbles on the basket.
    4. Salris advances around the corner and Eldritch Blasts the cart driver for 15.
    5. Bugfood advances into the room and Frostbites the basket Kobold, misses, and retreats.
    6. Jerry advances into the room, behind Tula, and reaches over the kneeling Tula to decapitate the basket Kobold with her glaive.
    7. The insects attack Tula, but are not able to pierce her armor.
    8. The cart-driver Kobold dips a resin-covered spike ball into his fire, runs away from the party, to the corner of the room, and throws the flaming spike ball at the party. The bugs, Tula, Vurguron, Jerry, and Salris are in range of its effect; Tula takes 9 and everyone else takes 4. Then he takes a step down the hallway.
  2. Round 2
    1. Vurguron attacks the driver with his longsword, dealing 10, then failing to penetrate the Kobold's pockets. The Kobold stumbles forward.
    2. Ryltar enters the room, then Ray of Frosts the Kobold but misses.
    3. Tula attacks the bugs covering her, smashing many.
    4. Salris moves to where he can see the Kobold, and Eldritch Blasts for 16. The Kobold explodes like the Death Star.
    5. Bugfood advances to Tula's bug-covered form, and thwacks her with a stick, but misses both the bugs and Tula.
    6. Jerry stabs 14 bugs, getting them all, and roasts them over the fire. They pop.

Bugfood examines the wall behind the basket, and finds lots of potions similar to what the alchemist was wearing:

Ryltar asks Bugfood to only release the insects once we're outside. There's also a wall of leather-bound bags, quietly humming. Bugfood takes any pot or bag making animal sounds: one pot. Jerry investigates the bags; they're full of flying insects. Of the other two types of pots, one gently thuds when sloshed, the other sloshes. Bugfood takes the one that ticks.

One Kobold stick has the head of a snake; it radiates magic. Bugfood replaces his stick with that one.

Bugfood walks down the left-hand passage a bit, puts his thudding pot down, and smashes it with the snake pot. It explodes into rock grubs, which run away. He then smashes the sloshing pot; it releases green slime that covers the entrance to that hallway. "Well, be free, anyways." He smashes another green slime pot there. And then he takes one slime pot. He releases all the rock grubs.

Ryltar takes a stick and tries to scrape the slime out of the doorway; the stick slowly dissolves.

We walk around the Alchemist Kobold's body, into another 10-foot-wide corridor of 4 rope traps.

The second trapped hallway

Vurguron trips the first trap, covering himself in brown oil. Salris sighs, then trips Mage Hand to trip all the traps:

  1. Brown goo, which coats Vurguron.
  2. Goo that falls out of the walls, then dissolves.
  3. less-viscous goo
  4. Slow, steadily-oozing goo.

Bugfood pushes past Vurguron and lights a torch, almost setting Vurguron on fire. We slip and slide through the oil patch. And we help ourselves across the oil and the thick muck. Ryltar gets stuck in the muck; we use him to anchor the rope, and then pull him out.

Jerry notices definitive tracks of the kid. The path curves to the right, and around the corner we see some firelight, and it's room number 2. We see two Kobolds, one wearing the top half of a dress and the other wearing the bottom half of a dress. They stole a dress, cut it in half, and share it. They're hunched over, holding a staff, poking bags. It's a 55x30 rooms

Jerry not-stealthily walks into the room, and says, "Dears, you're wearing that dress all wrong. Allow me to help you." With a -1 persuasion, the Kobolds are completely confused.

Salris throws a explosive potion into the room, between the Kobolds, dealing 4d6=19 poison to the Kobolds. The top-of-dress Kobold dies. The bottom-of-dress Kobold is poisoned, heavily sickened by the poison cloud, and then eats Bugfood's Frostbite and dies.

There are five other doors in this room, which means that there are a lot of tracks. Ryltar sniffs around to find the shitter; there is no shitter off this room. Jerry can't see the kid's footprints, but does see drag marks leading out doors #5 and #6. Ryltar thinks we should go through door #5, so we do so.

We walk down a 10-foot-wide corridor, where there are scratch marks on the walls, but nothing to indicate direction of travel. We come to a T intersection, leading to right or left. We see one drag mark coming in from the right, many drag marks to the left, and many drag marks the way we came. We go to the left; the tunnel narrows and spirals down to a landing, with a door to the left from which light comes. Ryltar looks around the corner to see a Kobold with a spear looking away from him, and bars.

In the Kobold jail

Tula runs in and attacks the guard.

  1. Round 1
    1. Tula uses Great Weapon, deals 23 with her sword, cleaves the Kobold in twain, sees another person in the room, goes to attack, and realizes it's the kid, and slams to a stop.

The three cells' bars are various collections of tools, bound together. In one cell is the kid.

Grat

In another is great splashes of black ooze. In the third, nothing. Ryltar tries to see if there's anything in the black ooze. Two eyes open, in the back of the 10-foot cell. Pulling itself out of the wall is a small goblin-like creature, covered in that black goo. Potato noes, large chin, long arms, all dripping in ooze.

It starts speaking in Sylvan, which Bugfood recognizes. "Bout time you got here. The kid — Kid! — eh, he doesn't listen. You going to break me out?" It is a Boggle, a fae creature. Bugfood tries to open its door, but fails. Ryltar asks why he's trying to let this creature out. Bugfood, translating, explains that this is Grat, the Boggle. They're tricksters; their oil can be slippery or sticky as needed. They can be good servants, when need be. Bugfood continues trying to free the Boggle, asking if he knows the way out.

Ryltar ties to open the kid's cell's door; he pulls the entire wall off the cell.

So it turns out that Grat has the keys to his cell lock; he could escape if he wanted but he doesn't know the way out, and has never been able to get past the Kobolds. So he stays in his cell, in his ooze. Bugfood asks him to keep watch as part of our long rest. Grat walks up the spiral and starts plugging it with black ooze. Jerry asks, worriedly, if he's trapping us in.

The kid sits in the corner, cowering in terror at the sight of Vurguron, who looks like a big Kobold. Ryltar gives the kid some rations, explains that we'll rest down here. The kid says, "They're gonna, they're gonna, they're gonna," bug Ryltar shushes him. "We'll keep you safe. We'll rest here and do our best to get out of the tunnels in the morning.

Bugfood empties the pot of slime into the third cell; in the cell was a teddy bear that Bugfood gives to the kid Kan. Bugfood tries to discuss with Grat about putting Grat into a pot; Grat doesn't like the idea of being confined.

The Night of the Stuffed Bear

Tula takes the first watch; the kid wanders over and says, "I don't feel so well." His face is gaunt and grey. With a medicine check, Tula realizes that something is wrong. She tries to take the bear away from the kid; the bear resists. As she watches, the bear stretches to stay in contact with the kid. Tula wakes Salris.

Salris uses his arcana and Detect Magic to try to figure out what is wrong with the bear. The bear is not itself magical, but it has a magical effect. Tula pulls the bear away from Kan; with resistance it comes free. Tula uses Divine Sense on the bear; it's not fiend, undead, or celestial. She puts it back in the cell, but it's bound to her hand now. She attempts to cut it, using Salris' dagger. Too wary of trying to hit her hand, she misses. She tries again, and hits, for 8. The impact ripples across its body, and settles. The bear appears unharmed.

Tula wakes the Party.

Jerry pins the bear to the wall with her glaive, dealing 12. A ripple flushes across its skin; but it's still stuck to Tula's hand.

Ryltar says that someone willing must take the bear; it can't be given to someone who doesn't want it. Bugfood asks Grat if he wants the bear, tries to convince him; He doesn't want it. Doesn't think there was a bear in here to begin with.

Bugfood leads Tula over to the acidic green slime; she puts her hand into it and the bear dissolves into a pink-and-white ooze. Tula takes 12 necrotic damage, and falls unconscious. With Healing Word Bugfood revives her, and then goes back to sleep.

Jerry takes the next watch.

Ryltar, an elf, takes the next four hours of the night.

The party levels up.

Leaving the jail

What are our next steps?

The kid, Kan, wakes up, and says, "They have Mr. Hogden," who it turns out is his actual stuffed bear. He's still weak because he was starved while in jail.

We need to get out; Bugfood asks Grat to clean up the stairs. Grat says, "I can take care of this," climbs the sticky ramp, and then spreads slippery black liquid all over the top of the sticky black liquid.

Bugfood sighs, "Grat, I know you want to be funny…"

Grat says, "I'm kidding, I'm kidding," and cleans up his goop.

Jerry gives the bees to Bugfood; Ryltar carries Kan. We go back up the ramp to the three-way junction. To the right is the corridor to room #2, and to the left is the tunnel with the single drag mark. We go up the tunnel from where the single drag came from.

We come to a T intersection, left or right, where the 10-foot tunnel narrows down to two kobold-size 5-foot tunnels. To the right is a slight breeze; to the left is no breeze.

Bugfood proclaims, "Form of: Giant Weasel!" and runs off to the right. The path to the right leads to the sleeping room where we killed the dress-wearers, room number 2. And to the left is the mushroom farm. He exits the weasel shape, and relays his report.

We return to the sleeping area (room #2) and try to follow the breeze.

Finding an exit

The Sleeping Area room #2 has six doors, which have been thusly labeled:

  1. Leads to sleeping area #9.
  2. Leads through the second trapped tunnel to the room with the basket and the fir
  3. Leads to Tula's chapel
  4. A dead-end tunnel
  5. To a T intersection, leading left to the jail and right to a second T intersection, which leads right to door #6 and left to the Mushroom farm.
  6. See #5

Tula scans across the doorways, trying to find the breeze. The first door she checks, #1, has no perceptible breeze. The second door she checks, door #3, has something that catches her eye. She wanders through the door, drawn by something that no on else sees.

Jerry, following Tula across the doors, feels that the breeze is blowing down tunnel #4. By the time she's done examining the doors, Salris and Ryltar have followed Tula.

The rest of the party, and Kan and Grat, stay in the room.

Tula's adventure.

Salris and Ryltar follow Tula stealthily as she sleepwalks through door #3. The . There's a two-inch-tall mound that stretches the width of the path. Tula steps over it carefully and continues walking. Her shadows follow, carefully stepping over every thing that she steps over.

After flights of stairs and a long hallway, Tula enters a room that once might have been a chapel.

There's amphitheater-shaped room, a dais, a plaque on the dais, and a scattered statue that once was on the dais. There's a flicker of candle-light on the back left wall, and a flicker forward to the right.

Salris sees no magic in the room. Ryltar sees the candles flicker in sync, as if one is a reflection of the other. He respectfully but quietly enters the room to investigate the dais, and Salris follows.

Ryltar doesn't recognize the script of the writing on the plaque on the dais, which is odd. He's quite a scholar. Salris looks at it, and with his Infernal heritage, is discomfited by this writing. He doesn't like it.

Tula kneels before the altar, and prays.

Ryltar goes to look for the source of the flickering, and finds nothing.

Salris sits down and watches Tula. She presents her sword and recites something before the altar; these words have power in them. They're not powerful from magic; they're something else, which Salris recognizes not. She breathes in, and looks around to the rubble that was once the statue, and begins to search it.

Furthest from where the statue once was, she picks up a piece of the statue, which Salris and Ryltar see has a recognizable left eye of the statue. She puts it away in her bag.

Then she comes back to herself, sees Salris and Ryltar, and asks, "You saw that?"

They acknowledge that they followed her, to make sure she was okay. She picks up her sword, and they see a glimmer of divine energy flicker in the blade. She says, "We should go back; we have a child to deliver."

They return to room #2, catch up with the party, and then head down path #4, following the breeze.

Following the breeze

So we follow the breeze, with Bugfood leading the way, followed by Vurguron, Jerry, Salris, Grat, Ryltar carrying Kan, Salris, and finally Tula.

Someone approaches from the rear. Tula tells that to the party, we rearrange.

There's a wooden panel crossing the 10-foot wide mineshaft, with a hole, and Bugfood takes the form of a centipede to crawl through the hole. On the far side there's a lot of boulders. It's a collapsed mineshaft. He comes back through the hole and explains.

We hear a chattering of Kobolds; they enter room #2 and then exit. So we head back to room #2.

The Kobolds ran out door #5 towards the jail cell. Bugfood invites Grat to shoot his goo all over the top of the jail cell path. We clumsily hide, making some noises.

We hear more voices, coming from the right (doors 1, 2, 3), and Grat has slimed door #5.

Bugfood moves to where he can see the sword-bearing Kobold in the Kobold path #1, and casts Heat Metal on the Kobold's sword, dealing 13 fire damage to the Kobold's palm, but the Kobold continues to hold it. Then he moves out of sight of the Kobold and activates his snakey staff. It begins to drip venom.
    6. Tula javelins the jail-path Kobold and kills it.
    7. Glowing-metal-sword Kobold attacks Vurguron with that sword, misses, then hits, dealing 5 slashing, takes 8 poison damage from the poisoned blade, but shrugs off the poisoned condition.
    8. Jerry misses the sword-on-fire Kobold with her glaive; Vurguron grants it a bit of cover.
    9. Ryltar casts Darkness within tunnel #2, so the Kobolds there can't see out of the tunnel.
    10. A Kobold bursts forth from the darkness and tries to stab Ryltar with the spear. The attacker makes a little damage.
  3. Round 3: A lot of stabbing happens.

    7. Glowing-hot-sword Kobold tries to shove Vurguron, and barely fails. Then he tries again, and succeeds, shoving Vurguron aside. The Kobold calls out to all the other Kobolds in the room, "For the Egg!" They all rally and become invigorated.
    8. Jerry stabs the Kobold for 9 damage, receives 9 damage from the Kobold's poisoned hedgehog shield.
    9. Ryltar casts Burning Hands to burn the Kobolds nearest him (Red and Spear).
    10. Spear Kobold stabs Ryltar for 7 piercing, and 3 piercing, and he drops the con save, allowing the Darkness to dissipate.
  4. Round 4: Mage Kobold downs Vurguron. Red Kobold downs Ryltar. Tula kills the Red Kobold and Spear Kobold. Ryltar revives.
    1. Vurguron swings at the Kobold, but again is deflected. As the Kobold has stepped closer to the fire, Vurguron sees that that Kobold is heavily scarred, wearing another Kobold's skin as a cloak.
    2. Salris casts Hexblade's Curse on the spear Kobold, almost killing him.
    3. The mage Kobold steps out of the conga line of death that has formed at the entrance of the second and third passageways, firing three Scorching Rays at Vurguron, knocking him unconscious.
    4. Red Kobold, seeing his allies, takes two attacks with advantage against Ryltar, downing him.
    5. Bugfood makes the hot sword heat up again, dealing 8 fire damage, but the Kobold doesn't drop his sword. Then Bugfood attacks the mage Kobold with his snake staff, dealing 6 piercing.
    6. Tula Divine Smites the red Kobold with her greatsword for 26 damage, killing it outright. She advances next to the spear-wielding Kobold, and continues to Divine Smite for 28 damage to the spear-wielding Kobold, dealing max damage and hitting him so hard that even his boots evaporate. She then continues forward next to the mage Kobold.
    7. The sword Kobold runs towards Bugfood, receiving 12 damage from Jerry's attack of opportunity, dealing 5 to her in return, then attacking Bugfood for 6 piercing and 4 poison.
    8. Jerry advances to the sword Kobold, attacks for another 12. The mage Kobold looks mostly unscathed; but the big old sword Kobold is kinda old.
    9. Ryltar gets a natural 20 on his death save, and casts Fairy Fire on the two Kobolds and Jerry, for additional advantage against the two Kobolds. Then he runs back towards Kan.
  5. Round 5: Mag Kobold downs Bugfood.

    7. Jerry drops Hunter's Mark, casts Ensnaring Strike and stabs the Big Bad Kobold for max 14 slashing damage, and the vines appear and spikily hold the Big Bad.
    8. Salris casts Snilloc's Snowball Swarm to bludgeon the Big Bad into oblivion, burying it under a pile of snow.
    9. Ryltar attacks the Mage Kobold, for a little damage.
    10. The Mag Kobold walks around Salris, provoking an attack of opportunity from the revived but prone Bugfood, whose snake staff bites the Kobold on the ankle and kills him.
    11. Bugfood heals Vurguron for 4.

Loot round:

Vurguron heard "For the Egg!" during the fight, said in Draconic. He doesn't share that with the party.

We comfort the kid, take a short rest.

Bugfood realized that the bag of magical beans is missing, and that Grat took it. Bugfood tells the party that. Grat disagrees with Bugfood's assessment, but Bugfood says, "I'd prefer that you have told the truth. You could've just asked." Grat says, "well, you can have this," he says, and extends his hand through a dimensional rift to stick the bag of beans to Grat's face with sticky stuff. After an hour, the sticky stuff will wear off. But we have the beans back. Bugfood explains in Common that he feels some sort of obligation to the Fae Wilds, and the creatures that inherit therefrom.

Salris continues to hear the spoon talking, and he starts arguing with the spoon. It's a conversational, inspirational spoon. The rest of the party can't hear the spoon.

Jerry puts the studded leather armor on Kan, and gives him a shield to hold.

Next steps

So now we need to escape the cave.

Looking at the map, the simplest route out would be to take doors 5 or 6 off of room 2, through tunnels to the mushroom farm, then out the tunnel to the first bedroom, then out pat the kennel to the entrance. But there was a cave-in between the mushroom farm and the outer bedroom, so there's no hope of escape that way.
