Last session

Well, all this stuff happened. In short:

The Ceremony

We've gathered in a space recessed in the woods, with torches lit, to run the ceremony. Each ceremony attempt takes an hour; on the fourth hour the spell succeeds somewhat: there is a flash of light, and Bugfood is almost blinded by it. The light passes over Bugfood, and he finds himself in darkness, with a light approaching him. He drifts closer, seeing Moon, naked, suspended in the darkness by white threads which pierce through her and vanish off into the distance. Another flash, another flash, and three of the threads flash and dissolve.

The snapped threads free her neck, abdomen, and left leg. The darkness behind her shifts, and a spider's legs move and turn, revealing an impossibly large Drow woman with horns above her head. She gently reaches out and wraps a hand around Moon, gently pulling Moon back towards Lolth. Another flash! The tension releases and Moon collapses.

It's late at night, like 10 p.m.

Bugfood suggests we tie her up again and get some shuteye. Zelrathi helps him tie her up again.

From the road comes some clapping and happy squeaking: a light-furred firbolg with purple nose and lavender spirally pompadour. The firbolg has two pairs of horns and wears a purple bathrobe, and is very jovial. "Oh, bravo!" he calls. Zelrathi asks who he is, and the firbolg replies, "I'm Eta'el!" It appears he enjoyed the service. "I just flew in, and I heard people were doing magic, and I wanted to see the spectacle."

"Magic?! No, this is the power of prayer!" says Bugfood, who is channeling a Baptist preacher. He objects to the spectacle framing.

It turns out that the Firbolg is looking for someone to help recover his "Sky Staff", and with some prying we get some information from him: he lost it in an altercation with Kerjes, and if we can confront her in her home, under the biggest tree around, we can steal anything from her home. Bugfood and Zelrathi doubt his motives, yet Insight checks reveal that his emotions are 100% sincere, though missing something.

"Have you done item retrieval before?" he asks. We reply in the affirmative. "So how about 4000 gold up front, and whatever you can carry out."

We huddle up. Salris is in favor of taking the contract. Zelrathi says it's suspicious as fuck. Ryltar trusts the vibe-checker in chief, Bugfood, who is currently forehead-to-forehead, praying with the masked Firbolg. Bugfood doesn't see anything wrong with the Firbolg.

Bugfood excuses himself, saying he needs to take care of something, Wildshapes to a giant spider, "winks" by brushing half his eyes with a pedipalp, and goes off to cocoon Moon, who is relieved. The Firbolg coos at the sight.

Jerry takes a minute to use her Primeval Awareness to check for aberrations, celestials, dragons, elementals, fey, fiends, or undead in the surrounding mile, but none are there. This Firbolg is probably a Firbolg.

We don't know of any evil gods of the sky. And the "Sky Staff" is probably associated with a sky or storm god. Maybe Cord.

He demonstrates a mask which holds itself to his face without stick or strap, and opens up to reveal an inner face.

He talks to Moon a little bit, asking her questions; Bugfood ushers him away. We discuss what we'll do with Moon if we take on the

Jerry asks him a lot of questions; Eta'el's face drops. "First off, do not trust any word she says. She's very much protective of her home, and it's protective of her." It's some sort of living tree? "Let's go with that. The brambles move, the thorns move. People get lost in there all the time. They seem to go around in circles. There's a lot of other nasty little critters that call the base of the tree home, like snakes and unruly birds. She's a sharp-tongued snake in the grass who needs to be defeated."

The staff is wood with clouds floating around it, looking like it should go in the sky.

Jerry scowls. "Can you defeat her, Eta'el?"

"Maybe."

"Why do you say Maybe?"

"If I still had my Sky Staff, we would be on even footing."

Jerry asks him to come with us, to provide assistance and help recognize the Sky Staff if she's created false ones. He doesn't agree to come, but does so while deflecting.

Zelrathi walks away from the Firbolg back to the party, and says that he's a hard no on accepting the job.

Jerry suggests that we ask around in Leen for information about Eta'el and Kerjes.

We ask Eta'el where we can find him later; he says his home is wherever he is. He likes to live in towns.

That night

Zelrathi takes the first watch, and Bugfood slips into Wildshape of a cat to follow Eta'el.

Alarms and bells go off in Leen. We're at the south end, and we're out of sight of Leen. Vurguron stays behind to watch over Moon. Salris, Ryltar, Zelrathi and Jerry travel into Leen, taking some disguise effects and Jerry's Pass Without Trace.

In Leen, people are arming up. Zelrathi, who hasn't caused any ruckus in Leen, steps out of the field of Pass Without Trace and asks a guard what's up. He says that the spiders are attacking, again.

Ryltar goes back to fetch Vurguron and Moon; Vurguron decides to stay back and guard Moon, out of the main combat.

Against the spiders.

There are 6 brown spiders and 7 blue-and-white spiders outside the town's waist-high wall.

  1. Round 1
    1. Salris casts that spell he's been wanting to cast ever since he got it: light dims around him. If something attacks him, it takes an attack from shadowy tentacles.
    2. The spiders move; three of the spiders phase out of visibility.
    3. Ryltar advances beyond the wall to cast Ice Storm.
    4. Jerry determines that the blue-and-white spiders are Monstrosities, casts Hunter's Mark, and with Whirlwind Attack and Extra Attack makes three attacks, smashing one spider to paste and heavily wounding the second.
    5. Zelrathi casts Haste on Jerry and Salris.
  2. Round 2.
    1. Salris is mad that spider attacks aren't hitting him and so he can't hit them with shadowy tentacles. He puts his shield away. The bonus from Haste still causes the attacks to be shrugged off.
    2. The spiders attack Jerry for 21 piercing and poison, and Salris but fail.
    3. Ryltar casts Fairy Fire on several spiders.
    4. Jerry, with Haste, pops two blue-and-white spiders and brings one next to Salris to Half.
    5. A brown spider attacks Jerry for 19 poison and piercing. Another spider begins to wrap up a city guard.
    6. Zelrathi Eldritch Blasts a spider.
  3. Round 3:
    1. Salris still hasn't been harmed, but pops the spider Jerry popped.
    2. One of the blue-and-white spiders grabs a cocooned villages on the east side and begins to run away. Two more spiders begin to cocoon another guard on the east side. There's another guard cocooned on the west side.
    3. Ryltar does something to try to save one of the webbed villages, but fails.
    4. Jerry attacks a brown spider on the west side, and fails to pop it. But that attack lets her use Mobile to disengage from it, so she runs after the blue-and-white spider absconding with a cocooned villages, and she pops it.
    5. A brown spider on the west side begins to run off with a townsperson. Another attacks Salris, and after the resistance math is done, he takes 8 damage and the spider takes some.
    6. Zelrathi does some Eldritch Blasts to the fleeing brown spider, but only brings it down to 1/3 health.
  4. Round 4:
    1. Salris is flanked by two spiders, and he cuts them up.
    2. A blue-and-white spider tries to attack Jerry, but fails.
    3. Ryltar tries to cast Slow on every brown spider on the left side of the road into Leen, including one that's trying to abscond.
    4. Jerry pops one brown spider with a critical hit and Hunter's Mark (3d10+6d6+5), then moves Hunter's mark to the immediately-adjacent spider that had just attacked her (and misses), then runs to attack the last blue-and-white spider which is absconding with another townsperson.
    5. Three brown spiders attack Salris, dealing a lot of damage which is absorbed by the spell he cast and which is returned to the spiders.
    6. Zelrathi serves some of the absconding spiders a heaping plate of Eldritch Blast.
  5. Round 5
    1. Salris kills one brown spider, healing from his Hexblade Curse and a Potion of Greater Healing.
    2. One blue-and-white spider drops its bound prisoner and tries to flee. Jerry's reaction attack pops it.
    3. Ryltar uses the Ice Heart of Winter to kill a brown spider.
    4. Jerry pops the last blue-and-white spider, then runs over to Salris to attack the two spiders attacking him. She pops one and deals 24 damage to the second one before disengaging.
    5. The remaining brown spider tries to run away; since it's Slowed, Salris' reaction pops it.
    6. Zelrathi casts Healing Word on Jerry for 8 healing
  6. Round 6
    1. Salris advances on one of the fleeing brown spiders to attack it, but doesn't kill it.
    2. Ryltar casts ray of Frost on one spider, trying to slow its movement, but he hits a tree.
    3. Jerry attacks the brown spider that's carrying a townsperson, and with two attacks, pops it. Then she removes to the remaining spider and attacks it once, halving its remaining health.
    4. That spider tries to flee. Jerry's attack of opportunity kills it.

Bugfood and Eta'el

Bugfood follows Eta'el as a cat.

Eta'el skips along a wall, and eventually skips off higher and higher, 10 feet up for every 30 feet forward.

Bugfood sits down, wraps his tail around his paws, and watches Eta'el skip away into the sky. He's headed off towards a cloud.

But this has taken enough time that the commotion to the north side of town has died down.

Vurguron and Moon

Vurguron exerts dominance by pulling a Gendo Ikari. He stares at a bound and gagged Moon, the firelight glinting in his spectacles.

It's a hot minute while the fighting goes on north of town.

Bugfood returns.

The spider carnage

We start to cut the town guards free of their webbing. Most are conscious; all require healing.

Jerry pulls eyes and fangs and poison glands from the 16 spiders, recovering 40 eyes and 14 poison glands.

The guards say that the spiders come from the north-northeast, attacking three times in the last month. The first time it was 2, then 6, now 16. They've heard of attacks on travelers on the road from Quadroads, but not from the south. And the spiders are getting bigger with every wave.

The guards show us "the leg", pulling a leg out of a guard shack and putting it next to tonight's kills: this night's spider leg is 6-7 inches longer than the leg from 20 days ago.

Jerry asks what the guards' plan is for the next wave. They say they're planning to evacuate south. Jerry recommends the Dwarven-Orcish North Haven, or coming with us to Quadroads.

Ryltar asks the guard about the Firbolg, Eta'el. They say that he's been around for a couple weeks, trying to hire people to go retrieve an item. Most people haven't accepted his offer, but there was a group that left last week, and they seem to have been paid up front.

The guards say that the tree where Kerjes lives is the Bonjoo tree (like a Banyan tree from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Great Deku Tree from The Legend of Zelda games, Hometree from James Cameron's Avatar, or Caras Galadhon from The Lord of the Rings), a giant tree in the forest. Kerjes has green skin, and so might be a hag or a witch.

We discuss potential plans for the next few days. Various plans are proposed; enough votes are in favor of telling Eta'el the Firbolg "Yes, after we go to Quadroads to take care of the prisoner problem" that we decide it's a good idea. Zelrathi says he'll sleep on it and talk to his patron.

Zelrathi and his patron

Zelrathi arrives at the bar. It's empty at first, but eventually Arye comes out to behind the bar.

"Arye, I've got a lot of questions that I really need some answers on."

"And I've got a request."

"Well, you first, you're the one with the powers here."

"Don't go home.

"Don't go home? To the temple? Well, why not?"

"Pain."

Zelrathi is confused, but accepts. He lays out the question of the Firbolg Eta'el, who Zelrathi doesn't think is trustworthy or a nice person.

Arye ponders. "Eta'el, you say?"

"Yes. Do you know him?"

Zelrathi sees a ghostly image of Eta'el's form show up at the bar.

"Thaaaat's not normal," says Zelrathi. "What's going on?"

"What they've said is not a lie."

"My issue is not what they've said. My issue is that they've avoided answering any questions! Because as it stands, I can't now in good conscience follow this person."

"I knew Kerjes when she was young."

"You knew Kerjes! Who is Kerjes? He won't answer anything about her.

"She is one that ought to be destroyed."

"Okay, but what bout him?" Zelrathi points at the ghostly apparition of Eta'el. "Choosing between the lesser of two evils is still evil."

"I cannot answer something that I do not know."

"I am asking your advice."

"If their intention is to remove power from Kerjes, then their intention is good."

"I don't believe that, though. I don't believe that someone who has acted the way that they did&mdahs;"

"There are free spirits in this world. Those who are unique and need to be understood."

"Well, that doesn't help me. But I have my answer."

Zelrathi waits to wake up, but the metagaming bird lands on his shoulder, and reminds him of the place that he showed up the last time he slept, where Arye forced him awake. And as soon as Zelrathi brings it up, she leaves and he wakes up.

He still doesn't have an answer from her to the Moon question.

The morning after

Zelrathi informs the party that he will help take Moon to the temple of Ioun in Quadroads, but he won't join the party to help Eta'el against Kerjes. Zelrathi offers to go to Quadroads alone, but we all decide to go with him.

Bugfood does Sky Write to say to Eta'el, "We accept, bring gold and mask :)". The clouds are rewritten to say ":)". Mid-morning, Eta'el appears from the forest outside our camp. He asks, "So you accept?"

"We have some conditions," says Ryltar. We're going to Quadroads first. Bugfood wants the mask first, and he wants to cast Identify on it.

We pull out a map, and Eta'el shows us about where the tree is: well past Sky Diamond, many days' travel to the east. If we're traveling by road, going through Quadroads makes good sense. 4 days' to Quadroads, five days to another town, eight days to Sky Diamond, another three days to the tree.

There's also a temple of Ioun outside of Sky Diamond, but we all agree it's not a good idea to take her near the academy.

The danger is that if we leave Zelrathi and Moon in Quadroads, and the thing we find at the tree is bad enough to require assistance, we would be 20 days away from Zelrathi's assistance. But Bugfood points out that in a level of time, he'll be able to travel through trees, and Ryltar points out the town in the deep forest where the Woven Council meets with the Drow which will be full of Elven wizards. And leaving Zelrathi in Quadroads will give him opportunities to research into his prophecies.

So we'll go to Quadroads first, and then decide our path from there.

Eta'el hands over the mask, and Bugfood and Zelrathi cast Identify on it.

These complementary half-masks can be worn separately or together.

The right half-mask is porcelain white with golden inlay. This mask reveals to you the best side of the world, as well as the best side of you to the world. While worn alone the mask grants advantage on Animal Handling, Performance, and Persuasion checks, while disadvantage on Deception, Intimidation, and Insight checks.

The left half-mask is obsidian black with ruby dust inlay. This mask reveals to you the subversive side of the world, as well as the subversive side of you to the world. While worn alone the mask grants advantage on Deception, Intimidation, and Insight checks, while disadvantage on Animal Handling, Performance, and Persuasion checks.

While both half-masks are worn together these features are suspended. In their place you can use an action to cast either the Clairvoyance, Nystul's Magic Aura, and Tongues spells, without the need of material components. Once the mask has been used to cast a spell in this manner that spell can't be used to cast that spell again until the next dawn. You must continually wear the full mask to benefit from these spells for their duration.

We realize that this helps people cast Mask, which would disguise whether they're a fey or a fiend. We might've reached a bargain with a devil.

Eta'el hands over the gold, and we split it among the five people who'll be doing Eta'el's task

Jerry spends a minute thinking about it with Primeval Awareness. Eta'el is not an Aberration, Celestial, Dragon, Elemental, Fey, Fiend, or Undead.
